North Atlantic Council in Georgia

18/09/2008 // The North Atlantic Council visited Georgia 15-16 September 2008. Ambassador Kim Traavik, together with ambassadors from all NATO-countries, met with President Saakashvili, Prime Minister Gurgenidze, Members of Parliament, as well as the extraparliamentary part of the opposition. They also held meeting with local representaitves of the UN, the OSCE and the EU in Georgia.

NAC Ambassadors also travelled to Gori, a town heavily marked by recent Russian bombing raids. In Gori, they visited a camp for internally displaced persons, administered by the UNHCR.

The NAC visit is part of the so-called intensive engagement between NATO and Georgia that NATO Heads of State and Government initiated during the Bucharest Summit in April 2008. The visit was planned ahead of the recent military actions in Georgia, but got more attention as a result of the conflict between Russia and Georgia. During the visit the new NATO Georgia Commission (NGC) was inaugurated and the first NGC-meeting held.
